The Britten-Pears Foundation has launched a new official website www.brittenpears.org to promote the music and achievements of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears.
The Britten-Pears Foundation, established in 1986 to promote knowledge and appreciation of the musical and educational legacy of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, has launched a new official website to further its mission and underpin its commitment to supporting the arts in general.
Britten was one of the foremost composers of the 20th century. He developed with the tenor Peter Pears a creative partnership which both inspired his music and led to the founding of the English Opera Group and the Aldeburgh Festival.
The new website is now the most comprehensive source online for news and information about Britten and Pears, the Foundation and the Britten Estate. It is also the portal to the unique and extensive research resources of the Britten-Pears Library at Aldeburgh.
Announcing the launch of the site, Richard Jarman, the General Director of the Foundation, says: "Interest in the music of Benjamin Britten and in his life achievements with Peter Pears is growing throughout the world. The new website will allow anyone in any part of the world to gain instant access to a wealth of information about the music and about current performances. This new development will be a major tool in bringing the music of Benjamin Britten to a wider international public."
The wealth of features on the new site includes
· NEWS: Up-to-date news about Britten and Pears, recent and forthcoming performances and developments at the Britten-Pears Library;
· BIOGRAPHIES: Snapshots and fully illustrated biographies of Britten and Pears and an animated TIMELINE;
· REPERTOIRE GUIDES and FEATURED WORKS, with audio clips from Britten’s own recordings;
· A live PERFORMANCE CALENDAR, with details of forthcoming performances and productions, and the opportunity to publicise your own Britten performance;
· Links to the RESEARCH RESOURCES of the Britten-Pears Library, including the archival and library collections, recordings, bibliographies, and the catalogue of published works;
· An online GALLERY displaying the latest exhibitions at the Britten-Pears Library.
"The Britten-Pears Library is one of the major music research collections in the UK, and among the most comprehensive single composer collections in the world", says Chris Grogan, the Librarian. "The Library is committed to promoting knowledge of, and access to, its collections, and we see the new website as integral to these developments. We are keen to help our users all over the world to be able to do much of their research online, to complement the resources available to them when they visit Aldeburgh".
The Britten-Pears Foundation website is designed to be accessible and usable for the widest possible audience. It aims to achieve Priority Level 2 of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 and has been designed to adhere to the guidelines and principles of the Disability Discrimination Act. The site uses CSS rather than tables for layout to increase accessibility and make the site compatible with all browsers and access technologies regardless of age or type.
The new website has been created for the Britten-Pears Foundation by WebProjects, a web development company based in Surrey which specialises in the arts. "The new Britten-Pears website is a resource we’re immensely proud to have been involved with" says Matthew Lindop, of WebProjects. "It’s exciting to be able to bring the knowledge and resources of the Britten-Pears Library to a wider audience through the web. We’re confident that the new site will support a broad cross-section of users, from expert academics to members of the general public."
