In 1894, Hans Pfitzner performed his first stage work, Arme Heinrich (Poor Heinrich) in Mainz * After teaching and conducting jobs in Berlin, moved to Munich in 1906, where his third stage work, Das Christ-Elflein (The Christ-Fairy) was performed, at first only as a Liederspiel * Afterwards went to Strasbourg, where he worked as a conductor, stage director and writer * In Strasbourg he wrote his masterpiece, the opera Palestrina (1917 - first performance in Munich under Bruno Walter) * Several writings against modern music theory * In 1918, Thomas Mann and others founded the Hans Pfitzner-Verein für deutsche Tonkunst * In 1918-1934 in or near Munich he composed works such as the cantata Von deutscher Seele (On the German Soul), the Piano Concerto and the opera Das Herz (The Heart) and received numerous awards * In 1936 he was appointed Reichskultursenator
