Hymnen an die Nacht was commissioned as part of a set of eight pieces for the Tremplin International Competition in Montréal in June 1975. This short, exquisite vocal piece shows Vivier immersed in his characteristic themes, describing an ancient world, a world filled with gods and with the living light of the sun, which rises each morning from the sea.
