Composer's Notes
Do Your Thing is based on an African-American Ring Game called Little Sally Walker. My mother would sing parts of this song when I was a child, and it is a hand game that is still popular today. Little Sally Walker is about response, and everyone getting a chance to shine. The lyrics were slightly altered. The harmonic changes are based on the fun, dancing, call and Blues as well as other standard forms in jazz. The children/audience are encouraged to sing along as guided.
