Composer's Notes

At the end of May 2017, Ludwig, wann? (‘Ludwig, when?’) took shape in my head as quick as a flash without me thinking about it much. And without me intending it that way, the piece has exactly 57 bars – the number of years Beethoven lived. Is that number a coincidence or not …? The motifs in this piece are well known, from Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5 in C minor to the Finale of the 9th Symphony. I tried to evoke the atmosphere of Beethoven’s piano works, dense with emotions, and to forge a link musically with the 21st century.

Ludwig, wann? is dedicated to Susanne Kessel and “250 piano pieces for Beethoven”.
