Composer's Notes

This work falls into two movements. The first begins with an anguished string trio that builds towards a lyrical flute solo followed by a solo clarinet. The movement ends on the chord with which the second movement begins. The second movement opens with a jazzy flute line interspersed with string stabs and high piano notes. After a section that features bass instruments and percussion there is a recap of the opening material from the first movement followed by a relentless coda which brings us hurtling towards the end of the piece.
