Programme Note
All Rise is a 100-minute composition with 12 movements written by Wynton Marsalis. The architecture of the piece is progressive – it represents a series of events. It blends the sounds of jazz, blues, classical and indigenous music from around the world to represent humanity's enduring ascendance over time. Musically, All Rise is based on a chorus (strophic) form in which variations of the harmonic progression are repeated throughout the composition, but the thematic material is not.
Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, All Rise was premiered on December 29 & 30, 1999 in Avery Fisher Hall, New York. These first performances of All Rise featured the New York Philharmonic under Maestro Kurt Masur, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Marsalis and the Morgan State University Choir.
