2014 Anniversary Highlights for B&H composers

(December 2013)

Musical celebrations in 2014 honour the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss and the Centenary of Andrzej Panufnik. Birthday milestones include Birtwistle and Maxwell Davies reaching their 80th birthdays, Andriessen his 75th and Jenkins his 70th.

Special Strauss celebrations in Dresden, Munich, Garmisch and Budapest include new opera stagings and concert performances. Manchester hosts a complete survey of Strauss’s songs with orchestra, combining the Hallé Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata.

Andrzej Panufnik Centenary

The Panufnik Centenary is launched in February with concerts by the London Symphony Orchestra and Warsaw Philharmonic featuring Sinfonia Sacra and Sinfonia di Sfere, followed by the Violin Concerto in Liverpool and the Piano Concerto around Poland.

Harrison Birtwistle 80th
15 July 2014

A Birtwistle at 80 series at the Barbican in London in May includes operas and concert works, while international highlights include new productions of Punch and Judy in Berlin and Vienna and The Io Passion in Sydney.

Peter Maxwell Davies 80th
8 September 2014

The Maxwell Davies 80th year is launched on 2 February with the premiere of his new Symphony No.10. Classic works including Eight Songs for a Mad King and An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise are programmed around the world.

Louis Andriessen 75th
6 June 2014

Highlights include Andriessen birthday concerts in Amsterdam, his new percussion concerto Tapdance, a festival around Washington DC, a new staging of De Materie launching the Ruhr Triennale, and the Nonesuch release of La Commedia.

Karl Jenkins 70th
17 February 2014

Special 70th birthday concerts are programmed at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London and St David’s Hall in Cardiff. Jenkins’s Adiemus Colores receives its world premiere at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod conducted by the composer.
