D'Rivera: A Rainbow of Rhythm at Caramoor

(August 2008)

The Caramoor Festival began this season with the second half of “Sonidos Latinos”, a two-year Latin American music initiative. The program’s featured works have earned a reputation for being as rich and multi-faceted as the diverse countries from which they originate, so much so that Composer in Residence Paquito D’Rivera has described the mixture of genres as a “rainbow of music”.

The initiative offered eight Latin-American themed concerts including "Buenos Aires Now: Tango After Piazzolla", a program dedicated to Astor Piazzolla's influence on Latin American music with the advent of  his "neuvo tango" in addition to the world premiere of D’Rivera’s Conversations with Cachao. A concerto for double bass, saxophone and orchestra, the work was inspired by the famous bassist “Cachao”, now 88 years old, who has performed in such diverse settings as symphonic ensembles, silent films, circuses and night clubs.
