Focus on John Adams in TSO’s New Creations Festival

(February 2014)

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s Tenth Annual New Creations Festival

This March, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s innovative New Creations Festival hits the ground running with eclectic programs featuring world and regional premieres by composers such as John Adams, Magnus Lindberg, and Zosha Di Castri. The Festival’s roster of artists includes TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian, pianist Yefim Bronfman, violinist Leila Josefowicz, cellists Saeunn Thorsteindottir and Shauna Rolston, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and John Adams.

John Adams made his TSO debut at the 2011 New Creations Festival. This year (its tenth season), the Festival puts a heavy focus on the composer’s works: Slonimsky's Earbox and Absolute Jest will both receive their Canadian premieres, and Doctor Atomic Symphony will be featured on the Festival’s opening concert.

In addition to the works of John Adams, Magnus Lindberg’s Grammy-nominated Piano Concerto No. 2—receiving its Canadian premiere—will be featured as a highlight of the New Creations Festival’s opening night concert on March 1, performed by world-renowned pianist Yefim Bronfman. Noted for its "arresting instrumental textures and barreling energy" (The New York Times), the concerto has become one of the most talked about works in the repertoire since its premiere in 2012.

Zosha Di Castri will also see the Canadian premiere of her recent orchestral work, Lineage, on the Festival’s March 5 concert. A commission from the New Voices program (a creative partnership between Boosey & Hawkes, the San Francisco Symphony, and the New World Symphony), Lineage explores the idea of timelessness and change in the stories passed down through generations. Lineage received its premiere in April 2013 with the New World Symphony, under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas.
