(December 2016)

After its moving world premiere performance at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on October 8, Karl Jenkin’s latest choral-orchestral work, Cantata Memoria—written to commemorate the Aberfan tragedy 50 years ago—travels to New York City’s Carnegie Hall for its North American premiere on January 15, 2017. The premiere is presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York—with whom Jenkins serves as composer-in-residence—alongside the composer’s Requiem from 2004.

Led by DCINY Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Jonathan Griffith, the Distinguished Concerts Orchestra and Distinguished Concerts Singers International combines forces with choirs from around the world:

The Cantata Singers (Elmira, New York)
Voices from City of Birmingham Choir (UK)
Côr Glanaethwy (Wales)
The Gisborne Singers (Australia)
Nelson Civic Choir (New Zealand)
Sno-King Community Chorale (Edmonds, Washington)
St. Lorenz Lutheran Middle School Choir (Frankenmuth, Michigan)
Aboa Gospel (Finland)
Coral San José Abesbatza-Coro In Tempore Abesbatza (Spain)
Kantorei ev. Thomaskirche (Germany)
Choir of the Karl-Rehbein-Schule Hanau (Germany)
Kirchenchor Walchwil (Switzerland)
Mornington Peninsula Chorale (Australia)
Newark Boys Chorus (Newark, New Jersey)

DCINY has a long history of presenting Jenkins’s work, having presented three world premieres of his works—Hymn: In Memoriam Martin Luther King Jr., The Peacemakers, and Sarikiz—and six North American premieres of his compositions. Additionally, DCINY has commissioned a new work by Jenkins to be premiered on January 15, 2018 to commemorate its 10th anniversary season.

On October 7, Deutsche Grammophon released a world premiere recording of Cantata Memoria, which jumped to the number one slot of the Official Classical Artist Albums Chart the weekend it released. Audiophile Audition’s review of the album cited, "A magnificent cantata that will leave the listener moved ... Beautiful, yet horrific in its rendering of this tragedy."
