John Adams Artist-in-Residence at Mostly Mozart Festival(June 2009)
John Adams will head to New York this August to serve as Artist-in-Residence at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival.
In this role, Adams will lead the New York premiere of his most recent opera, A Flowering Tree, performed by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the Schola Cantorum Caracas on August 13-14 and 16. Under the direction of Peter Sellers, the three performances of this “opulent, dreamlike, fiercely lyrical” opera (The New Yorker) will take place at the Rose Theatre at Lincoln Center.
A Flowering Tree has traveled extensively since its 2006 world premiere in Vienna, with performances in San Francisco, London, Chicago, Amsterdam, Berlin, Heidelberg, Tokyo, West Australia, and Los Angeles. A recording of the opera is now available on Nonesuch, with Adams leading the London Symphony Orchestra and Venezuela’s Schola Cantorum Caracas, directed by Maria Guinand. Following the New York premiere of A Flowering Tree, Mostly Mozart will present an all-Adams program on August 17 at Alice Tully Hall. For this concert, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) will perform Son of Chamber Symphony (2007) and will be joined by clarinetist Michael Collins for Gnarly Buttons, harkening back to Adams’s early childhood connection to the clarinet. On July 21 Nonesuch Records will release a premiere recording of Adams's Doctor Atomic Symphony, the instrumental work based on his 2005 opera, Doctor Atomic. This performance, featuring the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Robertson, is paired with Adams's Guide to Strange Places (2001). To pre-order please click here.
Adams will begin his tenure as Creative Chair with the Los Angeles Philharmonic this fall with the world premiere of City Noir. The work was commissioned to inaugurate Gustavo Dudamel’s era as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on October 8, as well as Adams’s appointment as Creative Chair of the orchestra for the next three years. The first European performances will be by the London Symphony Orchestra under Adams at Cité de la Musique in Paris and the Barbican in London next March, alongside the new String Quartet. The Dutch premiere in the ZaterdagMatinee series at the Concertgebouw will follow in November 2010.
