John Adams' Roll Over Beethoven Premieres in March

(March 2016)

AdamsScheherazadeEurope.jpg A new work for two pianos by John Adams premieres March 23 in New York City.

The world premiere of John AdamsRoll Over Beethoven (an arrangement for two pianos of the composer’s Second Quartet) will take place March 23 at the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space in New York City. The work will be performed by the pianists Christina and Michelle Naughton. At the premiere event, John Adams will participate via video conference from Berkeley, California in a discussion about the work and his coaching of the Naughton sisters. In addition to the premiere of Roll Over Beethoven, the Naughton sisters will perform works by Mendelssohn, Messiaen, Lutoslawski, and J.S. Bach — an arrangement of Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit by György Kurtág.

Roll Over Beethoven
employs a handful of short phrases from two late Beethoven works, the Piano Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, Op. 110 and the Diabelli Variations, to generate an absorbing twenty-minute structure that, in Adams’ words, "takes these tiny musical fractals through a grand tour of a harmonic and rhythmic hall of mirrors." Adams’ other composition for two pianos, Hallelujah Junction, will be featured on Christina and Michelle Naughton’s debut album on Warner Classics, Visions, to be released February 26.
