Magnus Lindberg: New York Philharmonic's Composer-in-Residence for 2009

(January 2009)

Lindberg in NYC as composer, conductor, educator, and curator

The launch of Alan Gilbert’s era at the helm of the New York Philharmonic in September 2009 also heralds the start of the two-year appointment of Magnus Lindberg as Composer-in-Residence. A World Premiere–New York Philharmonic Commission  from Lindberg will be the first work Gilbert conducts as Music Director, at the Philharmonic’s Opening Night Gala at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center on 16 September. The new work will also be performed by the Philharmonic on tour in Asia in October 2009, and in Europe in January 2010.

Works to be performed by Lindberg over the first of the two seasons of his residency include two large-scale orchestral commissions, the U.S. Premiere of his Clarinet Concerto at Carnegie Hall, with Kari Kriikku as soloist, and a performance of his 1995 work, Arena. All of these programs will be conducted by Alan Gilbert.

Lindberg will serve in a curatorial role for the institution and will be an integral part of CONTACT, the New York Philharmonic’s new-music series, including curating and conducting programs, and leading the series’ inaugural concert. In addition, he will also give Pre-Concert Talks and participate in adult and youth educational programs.
