New Unsuk Chin disc released by DG
(June 2005)
Unsuk Chin makes her debut on disc with a new portrait CD in Deutsche Grammophon’s 20/21 series which has already attracted excellent reviews in Europe, North America and Asia (00289 477 5118).
The recording features the Ensemble Intercontemporain with the conducting honours shared by Kazushi Ono, Patrick Davin, David Robertson and Stefan Asbury. Three of the works, Fantaisie mécanique, Xi and the Double Concerto, were commissioned by the EIC, and the disc is completed with Acrostic Wordplay, Chin’s most widely performed score.
"…vivid performances by the Ensemble Intercontemporain give further evidence of Chin’s fierce virtuosity and vivid imagination… Acrostic Wordplay is an exciting, overheated jumble for soprano and orchestra consisting of syllables, solfege, alphabets and more. Just as beguiling are the Fantaisie mécanique, with its industrial brass and percussion textures, and a phantasmagorical, rhythmically urgent Double Concerto for piano and percussion."
San Francisco Chronicle
"Chin achieves remarkable colouristic effect by having the timbres of the instruments fuse and blend with each other in near-magical ways… Not surprisingly, considering the refinement of her ear, Chin is a wizard at making magical use of electronic sound. Xi is the most exciting piece on the programme, progressing with real force and assurance, interrupted from time to time by startling eruptive exchanges between instruments and electronic sounds…Chin is a remarkable composer…"

Following its world premiere last month by the London Sinfonietta, Chin’s new work for two sopranos, countertenor and ensemble, Cantatrix Sopranica, is performed by the EIC in Paris on 4 June, with premieres by the other co-commissioners following at St Pölten conducted by George Benjamin (21 October), and by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen (9 May 2006).
This summer brings an expanded version of snagS & Snarls at the BBC Proms (10 August) and the Mecklenburg Festival (13 August) with Kent Nagano conducting the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and Warsaw Autumn features Chin’s santika Ekatala and ParaMetaString. Following Christian Tetzlaff’s recent perfomances of the the Grawemeyer Award-winning Violin Concerto in Berlin conducted by Rattle, the work can also be heard in Cologne (26-28 June) and Amsterdam (15/16 January 2006) with soloist Viviane Hagner.
