On the Waterfront Film with Live Orchestra Hits the Stage

(August 2015)

BernsteinOTWwebstory.jpg One of the most iconic films of the twentieth century—featuring a score by Leonard Bernstein—is now available to be performed live with orchestra.

Leonard Bernstein wrote only one film score during his lifetime; it’s only fitting the music he wrote accompanied what audiences and critics have regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. On the Waterfront is a benchmark in dramatic storytelling and Bernstein’s score is fused with its legacy, resulting in a standalone orchestral suite that is a favorite on orchestral programs. Now, over a half-century after the film’s premiere, On the Waterfront is available to be performed live with orchestra. This new presentation brings the music—one of the film’s most identifiable and iconic components—to audiences in a live concert setting as it accompanies a screening of the film in real time.

Starring Marlon Brando, and featuring a score by Leonard Bernstein, On the Waterfront is considered one of the most significant contributions in the art of filmmaking. Brando received rave reviews for his portrayal of dockworker Terry Malloy, a once-promising boxer held back by corruption and violence. The film was ranked 19th in the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American movies in 2007; in 2005, Leonard Bernstein’s score was also ranked among the organization’s list of the 25 greatest film scores in American film. On the Waterfront won eight Academy Awards (including Best Motion Picture) and Leonard Bernstein’s score—his only original film score—was nominated for Best Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.

On the Waterfront Film with Live Orchestra
will receive its world premiere presentation by the New York Philharmonic 18 September at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in New York City with David Newman conducting. The work travels on for a performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on 23 October, conducted by Richard Kaufman.

The premiere of On the Waterfront Film with Live Orchestra is not the only big Bernstein event taking place next month. In the UK, a highlight of the 2015 BBC Proms season at the Royal Albert Hall promises to be the all-Bernstein program conducted by John Wilson on 5 September. Taking the theme of ‘stage and screen’, the program features music from Leonard Bernstein’s Broadway musicals, including On the Town, Wonderful Town, and West Side Story, together with songs from Candide and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, plus the suite from On the Waterfront.
