Turnage's new clarinet concerto Riffs and Refrains
(February 2005)
Mark-Anthony Turnage's new clarinet concerto, Riffs and Refrains, receives its premiere in Manchester on 3 March.Mark-Anthony Turnage was commissioned to compose Riffs and Refrains by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé and soloist Michael Collins. The premiere at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester is under the baton of the orchestra's Music Director Mark Elder. Turnage has known Michael Collins for 30 years and the solo writing sets out to capture his virtuosity and versatility, from a jazzy riff-style in the fast opening movement to reflective lyricism in the arioso-based second. The ability of the clarinet to rapidly jump across registers is a characteristic built into the concerto as a whole.
Turnage's Scherzoid, a high-energy jostling of scherzos and trios, received its first US and UK performances last month from the New York Philharmonic under Xian Zhang and the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jonathan Nott. Further performances are already planned for next season by the Iceland Symphony with Rumon Gamba, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra with Daniel Harding.
The coming months bring the Finnish premiere of A Man Descending at Musica Nova Helsinki (5 March), and the UK premiere of Crying Out Loud with the London Sinfonietta under Martyn Brabbins (11 March). Turnage is currently completing a trumpet concerto for Håkan Hardenberger.Tun
