US Summer Festival Preview: Tanglewood, Cabrillo, La Jolla, Aspen, and More

(June 2014)

Boosey & Hawkes is on display at premier music festivals this summer

Summer is a big season for Boosey & Hawkes. Festivals across the United States—Aspen, Cabrillo, and Tanglewood, among others—have programmed a plethora of works by some of the most recognized composers of the 20th and 21st centuries with B&H composers at the forefront.

Taking place July 27–August 10 in Santa Cruz, CA, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, stalwart in its endeavor to present new and adventurous music, gives the US West Coast premieres of John Adams’s Saxophone Concerto (with soloist Tim McAllister), banjoist Béla Fleck’s The Impostor Concerto (with the composer as soloist), and Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Speranza. In addition, Cabrillo will host the US premieres of Brett Dean’s Fire Music and Detlev Glanert’s Three Songs Without Words. All performances feature the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, under the baton of Marin Alsop. See the complete schedule here.

The Tanglewood Music Festival is always one of summer’s biggest attractions. Tanglewood’s 2014 Festival of Contemporary Music (July 17–21) highlights John Adams’s Slonimsky’s Earbox, Jacob Druckman’s Bo, and Steven Mackey’s Beautiful Passing. Tanglewood’s full summer schedule (June 28–August 30) includes a special presentation of Jack Beeson’s dark and thrilling opera, Lizzie Borden (in a new reduced version that premiered at Boston Lyric Opera in 2013), the complete concert version of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, and Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto (with soloist Gil Shaham), among other highly anticipated performances. In addition to the Tanglewood performances, Britten’s Violin Concerto (as well as Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story) tour this year with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America to the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, IL (July 28) and Grand Teton Music Festival in Teton Village, WY (July 30), among other locations.

This year, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival (July 20–August 25) will feature several works by Brett Dean. The US premiere of his String Quartet No. 2 ("And once I played Ophelia") for string quartet and soprano, along with performances of Sextet (Old Kings in Exile) and Sketches for Siegbert for solo viola (performed by the composer) are part this year’s offerings. Bill Whelan’s new flute concerto, Linen and Lace, written for Sir James Galway, will be given its US premiere at the Ravinia Festival (June 5–September 14) in Highland Park, IL on July 8—at the Festival’s annual Gala Benefit. Galway will be joined by Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This year, the Festival also features a number of works by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Richard Strauss. See the complete schedule here.

The Aspen Music Festival (June 26–August 17), in its 65th anniversary season, presents a wide range of concerts featuring works by a host of composers from different times and places around the world. The Festival, comprising more than 300 events, showcases the music of John Adams, Béla Bartók, Benjamin Britten, Elliott Carter, Aaron Copland, Sebastian Currier, Alberto Ginastera, Osvaldo Golijov, Steven Mackey, Serge Prokofieff, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Mark Simpson, Richard Strauss, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. A concert not to be missed will be the US premiere of Brett Dean’s complete Three Memorials, featuring the Aspen Festival Orchestra conducted by Thierry Fischer. From July 30–August 22, La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest takes Southern California by storm. Works by Leonard Bernstein, Alberto Ginastera, Serge Prokofieff, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Igor Stravinsky fill out an exciting season of chamber music. See the complete schedule here.
