After the successful collaboration concerning the work ‘said the shotgun to the head’, the Swiss composer Thomas Kessler has again set a text of the rapper and slam poet Saul Williams to music. ‘NGH WHT’ for narrator and string quartet is based on Williams’ most recent book ‘The Dead Emcee Scrolls’. Kessler developed the musical structure from a recording of the recited text. On the one hand, the quartet has the task to retell and decode the poem, on the other hand, voice and instruments enter into a ‘fluid process between approach and distance, synchrony and time shift, adaptation and resistance’.
