Chick Corea Receives Chamber Music America's Highest Honor

(November 2009)

Hailed by DownBeat Magazine as “jazz’s most protean and unpredictable character” category-defying composer, pianist, keyboardist, and bandleader Chick Corea will be honored at Chamber Music America’s National Conference “Big Ideas for Presenting Small Ensembles” in New York City from January 14-17, 2010.

Corea, known for his limitless virtuosity for over four decades, will receive the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award—an honor reserved only for those who have made a great impact on the field of chamber music over a significant time period.

Throughout his esteemed career Corea has shown his unparalleled dedication to the art of chamber music through his prolific output of compositions. Selections of his catalogue include Adventures of Hippocrates, commissioned by the Santa Fe Chamber Music Society for the Orion String Quartet; Piano Concerto No. 2 commissioned by the Mozart Jahr Wien as part of their celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birth; and Imaginings for solo and duo piano, commissioned by the the Istituto Musicale Sammarinese for the 2008 International Piano Competition of the Republic of San Marino.

As part of the celebration of Corea’s voluminous contributions to chamber music there are several events planned throughout the conference. On January 16, Chamber Music America will present the special panel discussion panel “Chick Corea & Friends,” during which Corea will dialogue with Ida Kavafian, Billy Childs, Fred Sherry, and Phillip Ying about the string quartet form and its unique ability to bring classical and jazz genres together. (Other panel discussions on new directions in chamber music genres include “Steve Reich- a Pioneer who Expanded the Reach of Modern Ensemble Music” on Friday, January 15.)

In the evening of January 16, Chamber Music America will join forces with Symphony Space in a tribute concert for Corea featuring performances by Geoffrey Keezer, Hans Glawischnig, Antonio Sanchez, Marcus Gilmore, Tim Garland, Diane Monroe, Steve Davis, longtime duo partner Gary Burton, and The Harlem String Quartet giving the New York Premiere of movements from Adventures of Hippocrates

Corea will accept the CMA honor in an awards banquet on January 17 featuring speeches and performances by Peter Schickele, Billy Childs, Christian McBride, and Steve Wilson.
