David Benoit Conducts World Premiere of his Dolores Del Carmen
(May 2008)
Scored for Spanish guitar and orchestra, David Benoit’s Dolores Del Carmen will make its world premiere with the Asia America Symphony under the baton of the composer on June 7, 2008 at the George and Sakaye Aratani Japan America Theatre in the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Los Angeles. When commissioned by the Asia America Symphony to write a new piece, Benoit was deeply inspired to make this composition a rich and lasting tribute to his aunt, Dolores Ellsworth. More widely known to the world as the vivacious Dolores Del Carmen, she was a noted Flamenco dancer who regularly performed with the legendary José Greco. Dolores’s life---colorful and at times tragic---will be played out to full effect at the premiere with Sir Angel Romero of the famed “Royal Family of the Guitar” as soloist.
A passionate innovator committed to the exploration of many different musical genres, Benoit is an accomplished pianist, conductor, arranger, and composer. He has led the Asia America Symphony as Music Director since 2001, opening artistic and cultural borders by fusing the traditions of Eastern and Western music as well those of classical and jazz performance.
Benoit’s output as a composer includes a piece written for The Ahn Trio and his own jazz trio, Music for Two Trios, and his symphonic tone poem, Kobe, which made its debut with the Philippine Philharmonic in 2001 and was also performed in 2003 with Kent Nagano conducting the Berkeley Symphony. The composer himself conducted the Czech National Symphony Orchestra for his Peak Records recording of Kobe for his 2005 release, Orchestral Stories.
Benoit’s upcoming piano album, Heroes, which features new compositions including a David Brubeck tribute (A Twisted Little Etude) will be released by Peak Records on May 27. Benoit will perform with l’Orchestra symphonique de Montréal this September on a program entitled “Gershwin, Bernstein, Benoît, and all that Jazz!”
