New Recordings in Fall 2007

(December 2007)

This Fall has seen the release of many exciting new recordings. The Naxos world premiere recording of Ned Rorem’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Cello Concerto is the sixth disc of Rorem’s music on Naxos’ American Classics Series, featuring GRAMMY award-winning conductor José Serebrier leading the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, with pianist Simon Mulligan and cellist Wenn-Sinn Yang. This new CD has received a fantastic response, and was recently listed as one of Amazon’s Best Classical and Instrumental CDs of 2007.

Critics have called Lisa Batiashvili’s live performances of Magnus Lindberg’s Violin Concerto, written for her and premiered for her at last year’s Mostly Mozart Festival, as “must see,” “spectacularly poised,” and “electrifying.” The “fierce virtuosity” of those performances is recaptured on her new CD, released in October by Sony Classical, which pairs the Lindberg with the Sibelius concerto.

Also this fall, a new recording of the some new and recent works by Michael Daugherty, as interpreted by the University of Michigan Symphony Band under the baton of Michael Haithcock. Alongside its eponymous work, Raise the Roof (2007), the CD features Daugherty’s Asclepius (2007), Bells for Stokowski (2002), Brooklyn Bridge (2005), and Niagra Falls (1998).

Originally commissioned in 1989 by the Baltimore Symphony, Christopher Rouse’s Karolju is a set of eleven original carols whose expansive musical language encompasses everything from traditional carols, to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcraker, to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Rouse’s “joyous salute to Christmas” is placed alongside seasonal music by Lutoslawski and Rodrigo on a CD released by Sony BMG’s Red Seal Label.

On his new CD, “Unknown Rachmaninoff,” pianist Denis Matsuev offers a selection of newly discovered and infrequently performed solo works by Serge Rachmaninoff, including the world premiere recordings of both the Fugue in D Minor (1891) and the Suite for Orchestra in D Minor- Version for Piano (1891). Created with the support of the Rachmaninoff Foundation, the CD was recorded on the composer’s own Steinway. Matsuev offers performances both of the premiere works and of the more standard pieces that “would be hard to better.”

A new recording by innovative cellist Matt Haimovitz was recently released by Oxingale Records and, along with other new concertos written for the Haimovitz, features the CD’s title work, VinylCello, written by Tod Machover. The composer incorporates a live DJ into his conception and says that “the result places the cello at the center, but just barely, as the accompanying sound world literally grows out of the solo instrument, enhancing, enriching, and occasionally enveloping it.”

Finally, an exciting new release by the Young People’s Chorus of New York City led by Francisco J. Núñez features commissions by Dominick Argento, David Del Tredici, Benjamin Lees, Tod Machover, Michael Nyman, and Jim Papoulis. The recording is on the Vital Records label; all the included works were commissioned as a part of the Transient Glory concert series.
