Turnage celebrated by the London Philharmonic Orchestra
(January 2008)
The London Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates the music of its Composer in Residence, Mark-Anthony Turnage, over the coming month with concerts in London and on international tour, plus a new CD and website. Within a series of concerts featuring Mark-Anthony Turnage at the Southbank Centre the LPO presents the London premiere of Riffs and Refrains on 13 February with solo clarinetist Michael Collins and conductor Marin Alsop. Turnage has known Michael Collins for 30 years and the solo writing captures the player’s virtuosity and versatility, from a jazzy riff-style in the fast opening movement to reflective lyricism in the second. The ability of the clarinet to rapidly jump across registers is a characteristic built into the concerto as a whole. Riffs and Refrains was commissioned by the Hallé and, since its premiere in Manchester in 2005, Collins has performed it in Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium, with the Finnish premiere following in Helsinki on 27 March.
Also receiving its London premiere in the LPO's series is Lullaby for Hans, written as an 80th birthday tribute for one of Turnage’s key compositional mentors, Hans Werner Henze. Following the London performance on 2 February the LPO and its Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski travel with the work on a Far East tour to Seoul (12 March), Hong Kong (15 March) and Taipei (18 March).
New scores
To tie-in with the London premieres of Riffs and Refrains and Lullaby for Hans Boosey & Hawkes has published new study scores of both Turnage works in the Hawkes Pocket Scores series:
Riffs and Refrains (979-0-060-11773-2) £19.99
Lullaby for Hans (979-0-060-11985-9) £7.99
New CD
The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s new Turnage CD, released in February on its own label, features Hidden Love Song for saxophone and orchestra, together with Twice Through the Heart and The Torn Fields. This joins the LPO’s earlier CD with works including Scherzoid and Evening Songs. Both discs are available on sale from the Boosey & Hawkes Online Shop, priced at £10.00.
New website
The LPO has launched a new web resource on the music of Mark-Anthony Turnage:
www.lpo.org.uk/newseason/turnage/index.html
The new website includes an audio guide by journalist Stephen Pettitt, and information about the works being performed. The LPO will be adding to the site after each London performance, inviting audience reactions and reflections to counterpoint with the views of the critics.
Mark-Anthony Turnage’s future plans include the first complete performance on 5 June in San Francisco of Three Asteroids to accompany Holst’s Planets Suite, with the San Francisco Symphony presenting the US premieres of The Torino Scale and Juno in addition to Ceres. Current compositional projects include a new violin concerto for Christian Tetzlaff, Mambo, Blues and Tarantella, commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and Toronto Symphony Orchestra, due for premiere in London in September.
