Flammen (1901-02)

Dear Sänger: Der Schönheit viel getheiltes Gut
erhebt das Lied klingend zur Einheit,  -
befreiend riefen aus Höhen und Tiefen
es jubelnd die Töne zur Reinheit!
Und frei auch, wie des Sängers Lied
in Schönheitsglanz sein Herz durchzieht,
sind ihm Gehühl und That!

Und wie die Blume, die der Nacht entsprang,
der Sonn' entgegen blüht  -  in lichtem Drang,
so blick' zu meiner Sonne ich empor
und bade mich in ihrer Schönheit Glanz.
Wehrt meiner Sonne auch ein Wolkenflor,
einst strahlt sie mir doch ungetrübt und ganz!

The Minstrel: Beauty's many elements combine
to raise the song to unity  -
it frees by jubilantly calling the notes,
both high and low, together to pure art!
And free as the minstrel's song
runs through his heart in beauty's likeness,
are his feelings and deeds as well!

And like the flower that springs from the night
and blooms to meet the sun  -  striving for the
light, so I gaze up to my lady sun
and bathe in the rays of her beauty.
Though clouds now do obscure my sun,
yet will she shine clear and whole for me!
