Chick Corea's Piano Concerto No.2. The Continents was commissioned by the Mozart Jahr Wien ("Mozart Year Vienna") as part of their celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth. Composed for solo piano and chamber orchestra (which itself includes jazz quartet), Chick Corea's Piano Concerto No.2 received its world premiere July 1, 2006 at the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera House) and was performed by The Chick Corea Chamber Orchestra comprising of members from the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, joined by Marcus Gilmore (drums), Hans Glawischnig (bass), Tim Garland (bass clarinet, flute, and saxophones) and Mr. Corea (piano). Following the world premiere in Vienna, Mr. Corea and the Chick Corea Chamber Orchestra toured the Piano Concerto No.2 throughout Europe and Canada, including performances in Italy, Turkey, Montreal, Germany, Spain, and Amsterdam. On May 15, 2008, Mr. Corea’s Piano Concerto No.2 received its Estonian premiere, when Latvian pianist Vestar Shimkus performed the masterwork with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.
