Composer's Notes

For Ian is a short and simple piano piece written in memory of Ian Tweedlie, an exuberant and charismatic American friend who died some years ago. He was also a minister in the Church of Scotland in my home town, Cumnock in Ayrshire (and eventually father-in –law to my sister!) Like some of Peter Maxwell Davies’ reflective and unassuming piano works, this piece evokes a model from Scottish folk tradition and is structured in an elementary ABA form. The mood is melancholy and pensive.
