Detlev Glanert is currently the most frequently performed opera composer in Germany * his opera, orchestra and chamber music is characterised by an especially lyrical musical language and an affinity with the Romantic tradition, newly explored from a contemporary point of view * studied composition under Diether de la Motte, Hans Werner Henze and Oliver Knussen * spent a total of ten years in Italy, where he worked as artistic director of the Istituto di Musica and the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano for five and three years respectively * 1992/93 fellowship of the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome, 2003 composer-in-residence at Mannheim National Theatre as well as at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo in 2005 * gave lectures and taught composition classes in various cities, including Aspen, Genoa, Montepulciano, Melbourne, Jakarta and Sapporo * has so far written three symphonies, solo concertos for piano, piano duo, violin and tuba, as well as numerous orchestral and chamber works * his ten stage works have seen many productions around the world and received prestigious awards * conductors of his music include Marin Alsop, Stefan Asbury, Martyn Brabbins, Semyon Bychkov, Stéphane Denève, Iván Fischer, Oliver Knussen, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Jun Märkl, Andrew Manze, Kent Nagano, David Robertson, Donald Runnicles, Markus Stenz and Christian Thielemann * from 2011 until 2021, house composer of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam

Theatrum bestiarum (2004/05) for orchestra
Four Preludes and Serious Songs (2004/05) after Brahms, for bass baritone and orchestra
Jest, Satire, Irony and Deeper Meaning (1999/2000) Comic opera after the play by Grabbe
Mahler/Skizze (1989) for ensemble

Looking Ahead: composing new works within his residency as house composer with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam; Semyon Bychkov conducts Brahms-Fantasie with BBC Symphony Orchestra (Jan 2016); WP of Megaris, written for the 70th anniversary of RSO Stuttgart (Dec 2015)
