Neuwirth: New York portrait concert featuring US Premiere

(November 2012)

Olga Neuwirth’s …ce qui arrive… receives its US premiere on December 6 at special portrait concert along with piano concerto locus…doublure…solus

New York’s Miller Theatre presents a portrait concert of works by Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth featuring the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) led by Jayce Ogren on December 6, 2012. The special concert explores Neuwirth’s unique soundscapes through two pieces: her piano concerto locus…doublure…solus and the US premiere of her multi-media work …ce qui arrive…, both in ensemble versions.

Neuwirth’s locus…doublure…solus (2001) was hailed at its premiere as a forward-looking addition to the piano repertoire. The Guardian called it "...a distinctive vision of the piano concerto in the 21st century." Performed in seven movements and featuring a part for sampler piano, locus…doublure…solus presents an expanded view of the sound world for the instrument. Pianist Corey Smythe joins ICE for this performance.

The composer’s …ce qui arrive… (2004) receives its US premiere at this concert. The ensemble version of the original multi-media work features the musicians split into two groups, along with pre-recorded tape. Neuwirth’s score explores the subject of coincidence, integrating pre-recorded recitation by local New York author Paul Auster, and other songs on texts by Andrew Patner and Gerogette Dee. Following its premiere, the Financial Times noted: "Neuwirth's "...ce qui arrive..." combines a taped autobiographical monologue spoken by Paul Auster with an orchestral soundscape augmented by electronic samples and an amazingly synchronized video of the transgendered chanteuse Georgette Dee... Somewhere over the rainbow of Auster's banal-sounding fables... the work becomes inexplicably profound... Neuwirth's music is not easy, but rarely is an intellectual challenge so enjoyable. Her dazzling sonic combinations strike nerves and funny bones."

New York’s Miller Theatre, located at Columbia University, has championed Neuwirth’s music in America, presenting several portrait concerts in recent years. In 2004, the Ensemble Sospeso gave the US premieres of Verfremdung/Entfremdung (2002) and her bassoon concerto torsion: transparent variation (2001). In 2007, the Miller Theatre presented the New York premiere of her acclaimed opera Lost Highway (2002–2003), Neuwirth’s retelling of David Lynch’s cult film of the same name.
