Michel van der Aa wins Kagel Prize for multimedia works

(March 2013)

Dutch composer Michel van der Aa has been named as 2013 winner of the Mauricio Kagel Music Prize, awarded by the North Rhine-Westphalia Arts Foundation.

The North Rhine-Westphalia Arts Foundation has announced that the Mauricio Kagel Music Prize for 2013 has been awarded, by unanimous vote, to Dutch composer Michel van der Aa (b.1970). The award will be presented on 28 April during the Witten Days for New Chamber Music.

The Mauricio Kagel Music Prize is given to internationally renowned musicians whose work, like Kagel’s own, experiments with interdisciplinary concepts and techniques. It was established in 2011 and is awarded every two years; its first recipient was the French-Greek composer Georges Aperghis.

The prize is worth a total of €50,000, of which €20,000 is to be used to fund a new project for the North Rhine-Westphalia region. It is the second major international prize to have been won by Van der Aa in just a few months, following his receipt of the University of Louisville’s 2013 Grawemeyer Award for Up-Close, his cello concerto with film.

Michel van der Aa’s own combination of visuals, theatre and music may be seen and heard in his forthcoming 3D film opera Sunken Garden, which receives its first performances by English National Opera at the Barbican Theatre in London on 12 April, and at the Holland Festival in June. Other stageworks by the Amsterdam-based composer fusing music and film include the opera After Life (2005/06) based on the movie by Hirokazu Kore-Eda and The Book of Disquiet (2008) drawing on the writings of Fernando Pessoa.
