Robin Holloway 70th birthday: Uk premiere of In China(October 2013)
Robin Holloway celebrates his 70th birthday on 19 October, with events in the coming weeks by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Cambridge University and Morley College.
Events to celebrate Robin Holloway's 70th birthday include the UK premiere of his orchestral work, In China, presented by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Garry Walker at its Maida Vale studios on 14 November at 7.00 pm. The 20-minute work was the result of a journey Holloway made to China, along with four other composers on the Composing China project. It embodies his responses to the sensory and cultural experiences of his trip, ranging from the extraordinary natural landscapes to the skyscrapers of Beijing. The premiere took place in March at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

On the birthday itself, Saturday 19 October, Robin Holloway is featured on BBC Radio 3's Music Matters, in an interview with Tom Service about his musical life and works.
Holloway's new choral anthem specially written for this year's Festival of St Cecilia is premiered at Westminster Abbey in London on 20 November. On a Drop of Dew, setting a text by Andrew Marvell, will be sung by the combined choirs of Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral (where Holloway was a boy chorister) and Westminster Cathedral conducted by James O'Donnell. The work was commissioned by the Musicians Benevolent Fund with funds provided by the RVW Trust and the Britten Pears Foundation.
Other London concerts celebrating Holloway's 70th include two performances at Morley College in London conducted by Charles Peebles. On 24 October the Morley Chamber Orchestra performs the composer's Double Bass Concerto with soloist Dominic Bentham. The orchestra also plays Holloway's Third Idyll: Frost at Midnight, inspired by the poem by Coleridge, in the Purcell Room at the South Bank Centre on 11 December.
Cambridge, where Holloway was a music lecturer for 32 years until 2011 and where he is still based as Emeritus Professor of Music, honours his 70th with a selection of concerts. Music ranges from Men Marching for brass band (2 November) and Gilded Goldbergs for two pianos (8 November), to performances by the Cambridge University New Music Ensemble including a lunchtime birthday concert at West Road Concert Hall (26 November) and The Rivers of Hell and Serenade in Eb at St John's College (27 November).
Holloway's birth town of Leamington Spa is planning a birthday feature at its Music Festival Weekend on 5 May 2014 with the Okeanos Ensemble performing Serenade in Db and Summer Music: Concertino No.5.
