Anna Clyne (b.1980, London) has emerged as a young composer of exceptional talent. The past year has seen the UK premiere of her orchestral work Night Ferry by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, and the first UK performance of A Wonderful Day at the Edinburgh Festival by the Bang on a Can All-Stars. The Last Night of the Proms in September opened with the world premiere of her concert overture Masquerade, conducted by Marin Alsop and televised globally by the BBC. Anna Clyne is Mead Composer in Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In his nomination citation for Anna Clyne in The Times, Richard Morrison describes how "much of the most imaginative new music for orchestras is coming from young women. Leading the charge is 33-year-old Anna Clyne. Her big breakthrough, as far as British audiences are concerned, came last September at the Last Night of the Proms when millions of television viewers heard her specially written orchestral work Masquerade, described by The Times as “a giddy, mosaic-like swirl round an English country dance”.

Melyvn Bragg will once again act as master of ceremonies at the event on Monday 27 January at the Dorchester Hotel in London and the award itself will be designed by the legendary pop artist Sir Peter Blake, who famously co-created the album sleeve for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

"Once again, the list of nominees for the South Bank Sky Arts Awards shows that the UK arts landscape is as vibrant as ever. It's vital to honour the excellence of artists, performers, musicians and authors especially at this time, and were very glad that we can do this," commented Melvyn Bragg.

The awards will be broadcast on Sky Arts 1 on Thursday 30 January 2014 at 9.30pm.
