In 1942, Roger Quilter (1877-1953) began composing arrangements of folk songs to send to a favourite nephew, Arnold Guy Vivian, who was serving in the military during World War II. A year later Vivian was listed as missing in action. The folk song settings, intended as a gift, instead became a published memorial. Original edition for medium voice and piano.

"This is a wonderful resource. I highly recommend it. The melodies are very straightforward making it a good resource for even beginning singers. The piano accompaniments are what really make this work valuable. The are very inventive and charming. It would be wonderful to have some choral arrangements to go along with these wonderful piano accompaniments."
