English Church Music assembles in two volumes around 100 of the finest examples of English sacred choral music of the past five centuries. This second volume is dedicated to canticles and responses.

Oxford Choral Classics: English Church Music assembles in two volumes around 100 of the finest examples of English sacred choral music of the past five centuries. Complementing a first volume of anthems and motets (published in August 2010), Volume 2 presents settings of the canticles (the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis for Evensong and the Te Deum and Jubilate for Morning Prayer) alongside the responses and preces (both modern and ancient). In addition, the volume contains several settings of the Lord's Prayer and an Order for Compline. Choirs can expect a wide selection of works from the late Renaissance (Byrd, Gibbons, Stone) and Restoration (Purcell and his contemporaries), as well as works from the early, middle, and late English Romantics. These include the four principal evening canticle settings by Stanford (in A, B flat, C, and G) and settings by Wesley, Wood, Walmisley, and 20th-century composers.
