Haydn composed six settings of the Mass text for the name day of Princess Maria Josepha Hemengild Esterhazy. The Nelson Mass is the third of these, written between 10 July and 31 August 1798.
Haydn gave it the title Missa in Angustiis in his own catalogue of works and is also known as the Imperial Mass.
