Lost music by Finland’s national composer unearthed

The lost scores of four songs by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius have been found in a bank vault in the Finnish city of Oulou.

Although the existence of the scores was known, it was thought they were lost because there was no record of their whereabouts. They were part of a 12-song cycle written for the composer’s favourite singer, the soprano Ida Ekman. The other eight are held in various collections abroad.

It is thought the Finnish government plans to keep the scores and house them in one of the national museums dedicated to the composer, who has become a Finnish national hero and whose famous tone poem Finlandia is regarded as a national anthem.
