The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, California will present three U.S. premieres along with a West Coast Premiere this summer. The U.S. premieres of Brett Dean’s Amphitheatre and Moments of Bliss will be performed by the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra under the direction of Marin Alsop on August 7 and 8, respectively, at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Amphitheatre is a scene for large orchestra depicting the ruins of an ancient ampitheatre as envisioned in German author Michael Ende’s children’s book Momo. Moments of Bliss for orchestra and electronics is based on four scenes from the “powerfully dark and satirical tale” entitled Bliss, the first novel by Australian author Peter Carey. Dean recently won the 2009 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition for his violin concerto The Lost Art of Letter Writing, premiered in 2007.

Enrico Chapela, who signed with Boosey & Hawkes last summer, has enjoyed an explosion of North American activity this year. (Earlier this season his Li Po received its world premiere on Esa Pekka-Salonen’s final Green Umbrella concert, Irrational Music made its world premiere at New York City’s New Paths in Music, and Noctámbulos received its U.S. premiere with the Brooklyn Philharmonic.) The momentum continues under the baton of Marin Alsop in the West Coast premiere of Ínguesu (2006) on August 8 with the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra. Days later the same piece will be performed at Tanglewood’s Festival of Contemporary Music.

James MacMillan will enjoy two festival performances this August. On August 1, the Yellow Barn Music Festival in Putney, VT will present a performance of Tuireadh, for clarinet and string quartet, while the U.S. premiere of MacMillan’s opera in three acts, The Sacrifice: Three Interludes will be performed on August 15 with the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra under the direction of Marin Alsop, along with Magnus Lindberg’s Seht die Sonne (“Behold the Sun”), in the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Lindberg was recently appointed to the two-year position of Composer-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic with the start of Alan Gilbert’s position as Music Director.

The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival joins Cabrillo in honoring Grawemeyer-winning Brett Dean this year. On August 14 at the St. Francis Auditorium, Dean’s works to be performed include Demons featuring flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, Eclipse featuring the Orion String Quartet, and Huntington Eulogy featuring cellist Felix Fan and pianist Andrew Russo. The composer will also perform his own piece Intimate Decisions for solo viola. On August 21, eighth blackbird will perform the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Grazioso! at the Lensic Performing Arts Center. In his third year as a co-composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Turnage’s profile in the U.S. has grown, boasting recent premieres in Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles.
