Oehring/Schiphorst: Lorca dance theatre

(February 2000)

Composers Helmut Oehring and Iris ter Schiphorst recently collaborated with choreographer Joachim Schlömer on a new Lorca-based dance theatre work, Bernarda Albas Haus, which received a successful premiere in Basel on 11 November. The work was a co-commission from the Theater Basel, the Hebbel-Theatre in Berlin, and the Romaeuropa festival with financial support from the Goethe Institut in Rome. The work is scored for counter-tenor, deaf sign artist, small ensemble and electronics.

"Schlömer’s choreography intensifies Oehring’s musical resources into a dark maelstrom, into which the audience is drawn inexorably… whether in the ensemble dance scenes in which Bernarda’s daughters seem to entice the public with the swaying rapture of their pirouettes, or in the earlier narrative moments as Alba’s widow beats one or other of the daughters… all is dominated by a near frightening atmosphere of smouldering passion, frustration, and open or latent aggression." Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"Both the expressive sign language of the deaf actress Christina Schönfeld and the lofty angelic tones of countertenor Arno Raunig awaken the wondrous impressions of timelessness and physical disembodiment, of sphinxlike mystery and purity… This dancework has unquestionably vehement power and great potency. It touches, it inspires, and leaves eyes and ears gripped for its seventy-minute duration. The images and sounds remain with you long after." Basler Zeitung

Forthcoming Oehring new works include Cruisen, commissioned by Art Zoyd for the Blindman Saxophone Quartet and orchestra. First performances are planned on 28 February in Lille and 3 March in Paris with the Orchestre National de Lille under Jean-Claude Casadesus. On 29 April the Asko Ensemble gives the premiere of 6echs, a choreographic collaboration between Oehring and Leonard Cruz, commissioned by Radio Bremen. Future projects for premiere in 2001 include an orchestral work for the Stuttgart Opera Orchestra, and a music theatre piece with Iris ter Schiphorst for the Bonn Opera House.
