This work can be performed with a minimum of 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 1 trumpet, percussion, violins 1 & 2, viola (or violin 3) and cello. A distant drum-beat indicates the approaching procession which passes and gives way to four linked sections suggesting the various displays at the gala. A jig-like country dance is linked to a stately strathspey which, despite its "Scotch Snap", has a blues like tread. The dance that follows fades and eventually leads into a graceful waltz. This, in turn, is abandoned when the distant procession is heard making its return journey. A solo flute lazily recalls the country dance tune whilst trudging wearily home. The final major chord provides a perfect sunset!
