Setting the early morning scene on Christmas morning, James Lavino uses subtle dissonances and gentle resolutions to signify both the anticipation and the apprehension that accompanied the hours before Jesus' birth. The loudest marked dynamic is “mp” allowing the singers and conductor to explore the many colours and intensities found in this restricted dynamic range.

The piece was commissioned by Dean Close School for Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum, UK.

Text by Christina Rosetti.
