From the Glyndebourne Opera House...
An exhilarating new Carmen from Glyndebourne. Director David McVicar describes Carmen as "the first ever musical", and in his new production, with Anne Sofie von Otter in the title role, Carmen is restored to the original Opera. Comique as Bizet wrote it, stripping away subsequent re-workings which turned it into a grand opera. Philippe Jordan makes his Glyndebourne debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Glyndebourne Chorus and a cast that includes Marcus Haddock, Laurent Naouri and Lisa Milne. This double disc set also includes extensive extra features on costume, dance, characters and the gardens of Glyndebourne.

Reviews
‘Violent, passionate, superbly played… Glyndebourne’s Carmen is simply gripping,’
The Sunday Times Culture

‘...a fantastic two-disc set...a performance that truly is what opera theoretically aspires to be: sung drama.’
New York Times

‘What great value...a veritable feast for the eye and ear...excellent extra features...222 minutes of high-class entertainment.’
Classic fM Magazine

‘In the grip of violent emotions, Anne Sofie Von Otter paints a complete “Carmen” ’
Los Angeles Times

‘This thrilling production gets right to the heart of Bizet’s famous tragedy, dusting down many cobwebs along the way. The flamboyant young Philippe Jordan’s brisk, energetic conducting ensures a high-octane orchestral contribution that is enjoyable in its own right. Couple this with a smouldering, beautifully sung central performance from the one-time queen of cool, Anne Sophie von Otter, an intelligent, character-led staging (with superb costume design) and you have a real Carmen for our times.’
Musicweb

‘Anne Sofie von Otter is a wonderfully sexy Carmen. And she has strong support from French conductor Philippe Jordan and a solid cast…One of 10 most memorable releases in 2003.’
Dallas Morning News (USA)
