One of only a few Piano Solos composed by Britten, written as a test piece for the very first Leeds Piano Competition.

It is a moody, disturbed nocturn, and seems deceptively simple but the skill is in the nuances of touch and rhythm to evoke the sense of dark and foreboding.

"This piece explores the full characteristics of a modern strung piano. It is moody and evocative of a moonlit night where hunters pass by in search of prey.

It stretches the pianist's ability and I would recommend it as a piece for grade 7/8 at least. It was written for the Leeds International Piano Competition, so it's not a doddle!
