A transcontinental partnership, innovative and highly virtuosic, American Gary Burton on vibrophone and Japanese Makoto Ozone on piano are spotlighted here in a historic performance at Munich's Carl-Orff-Saal in 1995.

With a repertoire from Benny Goodman's 30s Swing through John Scofield to the Tango Nuevo World of Astor Piazzolla, the duo use characteristically sophisticated arrangements and an empathy bordering on mind-reading. It has been said on more than one occasion that Gary Burton's playing is like a summary of the whole history of jazz vibraphone playing in its accomplishment and its many and varied influences.

The duo have now been working together for several decades, and one of their most recent recording projects Virtuosi (2002), which explores the improvisational possibilities of classical themes including works by Brahms, Scarlatti and Barber, was nominated in the classical category of the Grammy awards.

"We expected high standards of virtuosity and accuracy, but the duo's audacious reinvention of Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F (third movement) took everyone by surprise; the hall erupted with applause" (The Guardian on Burton/Ozone's performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, July 2002)
