The Four Seasons comprise the composer's midwestern slant on the each of the four seasons. Islands was inspired by an eight mile strip of revitalized prarie along Illinois Route 6 between Litchfield and Gillespie. The subtly changing colors of the prarie grasses and the surrounding farmland provided vivid contrast with the flashes of bright color from turning leaves.
