A musical drama in three acts, Menotti's first full length opera eloquently and poignantly expressed the human condition when confronted with the indifference, insensitivity and outright brutality of political systems and bureaucracies. The Consul, produced by Chandler Cowles and Efrem Zimbalist Jr., had it's world premiere on March 1, 1950 at the Shubert Theater in Philadelphia.
