Composed for vol. 3, the letter ‘D’ as part of flautist Sharon Bezaly’s comprehensive recording project, ‘From A to Z’, Brett Dean’s seven-minute solo piece makes ample use of the note corresponding to the letter D: “Demons kicks off with hammering high Ds which are to be played with a great variety of instrumental colours, articulation, harmonics and nuances, in a highly excited and ‘demonic’ manner. Then the piece changes its direction, revealing a short but dense ‘rondo form’. The beginning, which was dominated by D, returns amidst contrasting sections until its energy is used up…”. Sharon Bezaly’s recording is published on the Swedish label BIS (BIS SACD 1459).
