Much of Johann Mattheson’s work was thought to be lost after World War II, until 1998 when some works were rediscovered. These works included Der liebreiche und geduldige David (The Loving and Patient David) of 1723, one of Mattheson’s last oratorios.

The majority of his oeuvre was vocal, and it is the operas and oratorios in particular that show him as a well-versed, highly imaginative composer who more than deserves his renaissance on CPO.
