Cesar Franck: Pièce V

"This is a simple-sounding, yet really haunting piece, and very difficult to control well with the necessary wide range of dynamics and flexibility. I learned it as a boy, 55 years ago; I remember being taken by my oboe teacher to a Leon Goossens recital in which he played it, so inspiringly that I began winning competitions soon after. After all these years, it is still a favourite of mine, and I have transcribed it (an octave lower) to bassoon (my current instrument), and it still works."
