The first movement of Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki's Piano Sonata No1 was premiered on 28 July 1984 at the Lerchenborg Festival by Eugeniusz Knapik. The first complete performance of the work was given on 17 March 1991 at the Helsinki Biennale by Paul Crossley.
