These six French folksong arrangements were commissioned by the soprano Sophie Wyss, and first performed by her with Ernest Lush (piano) in 1957. Vivd, lyrical and delicate, Gerhard's skilfull treatment maintains their traditional appeal whilst raising their level to that of art-song. Includes a biographical note on Gerhard, full lyrics and reference translations in English, German, French and Spanish.

"The Six Chansons populaires francaises of 1944, re-published here by Boosey, make a delightful cycle of French folksong settings reminiscent of De Falla. In their clarity of texture they would also not be out of place alongside Britten, though Gerhard's harmonies are warmer, suffused with a Southern sun, the occasional pungent dissoncance adding a touch of spice."
