This work, written for SSAATB soli, SSATB chorus and orchestra, was first performed at the thanksgiving for the Treaty of Utrecht held in St Paul's Cathedral, London, on 7th July 1713. Together with Jubilate, it was quickly established in standard use on such occasions as the Festivals of the Sons of the Clergy.

This vocal score, edited by Watkins Shaw, includes a keyboard reduction of Handel's instrumental score for rehearsal purposes.
